How to Choose a Pottery Class in Barcelona: 5 Questions to Ask

Barcelona has more pottery studios than ever, and at first glance they all look the same: beautiful photos, photogenic wheels, and promises of a unique experience. But they do not all work the same way. Before you sign up, it is worth asking yourself these five questions. We are writing this from our studio in La Barceloneta, where we have been welcoming people for years — many who come after trying other places, and many who are trying pottery for the first time.

1. How many people are in each class?

This is the detail that makes the biggest difference, and the one mentioned the least on studio websites. A class with 15 or 20 people might seem lively, but the reality is that individual attention gets spread thin. If you get stuck with a technique or do not know how to continue, you might spend a long time waiting for someone to help.

At La Mesa we work in small groups. That means someone is always nearby to guide you, correct you, or simply let you be if you are in a focused moment. Pottery is learned with the hands, yes, but also with someone showing you the right gesture at the right time.

2. Is there a minimum commitment?

Many studios work with class packs, quarterly passes, or multi-month enrolments. That is fine if you already know pottery is your thing, but if you are just starting out, the last thing you need is to feel locked in before you know whether you enjoy it.

At La Mesa you can start with a single drop-in class — two hours, no commitment, no registration fee. You come, you try it, and then you decide whether to continue with a weekly class, a flex package, or whatever fits your life. No pressure, no rush.

3. Are materials included?

Some studios list a price that is not the price you actually pay. Clay is extra, glazes are extra, kiln firings are extra. What looked like an affordable class ends up costing quite a bit more than expected.

At La Mesa everything is included: clay, tools, glazes, and firings. The price is the price. No extras, no surprises, no fine print. We think that is more honest and makes it easier for you to plan.

4. Where is it?

Location matters more than you might think. If the studio is far away or in an area with poor transport links, you will eventually stop going. Simple as that. And the opposite is also true: if the studio is somewhere you enjoy being, going to class becomes a plan, not a chore.

Our studio is in La Barceloneta, at Carrer de l'Atlàntida 47. Five minutes from the beach, next to the harbour, with the L4 metro stop nearby. After class you can walk along the waterfront, grab a drink at a terrace in the neighbourhood, or simply wander. Pottery is better when the surroundings match.

5. What is the vibe like?

This is something you cannot see on a website, but it shapes the whole experience. Does the studio feel relaxed or does it feel like a formal class? Do the people teaching take the time to get to know you, or are they following a script?

At La Mesa we do not think of ourselves as teachers. We are hosts. We like to welcome each person, find out what brought them here, what they want to make, and how they are feeling. We believe pottery is much more than a technique: it is a moment of calm, connection, and making something beautiful with your hands. And that shows in how we treat everyone who walks through the door.

In short

Choosing a pottery class is not about finding the cheapest one or the one with the best Instagram photos. It is about finding a space where you feel comfortable, looked after, and excited to come back. Ask yourself these five questions, compare honestly, and choose what fits you. If that turns out to be us, great. If not, no hard feelings — the important thing is that you enjoy it.
